Setting: 

We don't exactly know where the setting of the story takes place, but clues in the story can help us predict

1) : Brian is headed for the oilfields of Northern Canada where his father is working in the oil rig as a Mechanical Engineer.

2).Since the plane goes off the course when the pilot bumps the steering wheel, it ends up flying northwest instead of due north, stranding Brian farther away from his destination

3) Brains plane lands in L Shaped lake and he is surrounded by dense wilderness and encounters wild animals like bear, Fox, Porcupine, we presume that he is lost in Northern Woods of Canada which are very dense and are a home to large number of animal species like wolves, deer, black bear, otter, wolf, porcupine.
